Just me, ranting, on illegal immigration.

I recently decided that I don't like the term 'illegal immigrant'. The term immigrant has a positive connotation to me, just people trying to do what my ancestors did. The crime committed when a foreign national enters this country without permission is 'illegal entry'. Here in Missouri, the legal statutes state that 'No person shall enter upon or into any lands, tenements or other possessions, and detain and hold the same, but when entry is given by law, and then only in a peaceable manner.' (MO 534.010) Isn't that exactly what these people are doing at a federal level?

In addition to illegal entry, I believe that most of these ‘illegal immigrants’ should be charged with identity theft. Once again, the laws in my home state read: 'A person commits the crime of identity theft if he or she knowingly and with the intent to deceive or defraud obtains, possesses, transfers, uses, or attempts to obtain, transfer or use, one or more means of identification not lawfully issued for his or her use. (MO 570.223) I doubt that there are very many people who enter our country illegally who don't obtain, or attempt to obtain, some sort of identification to allow them to deceive employers into hiring them, or to defraud the government into allowing them access to social services they have no right to.

How about those social services? Referring back to MO's regulations: 'A person commits the crime of stealing if he or she appropriates property or services of another with the purpose to deprive him or her thereof, either without his or her consent or by means of deceit or coercion.' (560.030) A perfect fit for these foreigners who take from the people of this nation on a regular basis. Sometimes it's slightly less direct, like stealing an education from our public school system, or stealing medical care from our hospitals, or driving (without a legal license or proper insurance) on our public roads. I'd estimate that 100% of people who are here illegally would be guilty of theft in one form or another.

The term 'illegal immigrant' doesn't begin to describe their actions. I believe that a more correct term would be thief. While we might think that they ought to be treated as any other criminal and put in jail, that doesn't really fix the problem. Taxpayers pay to operate jails to our standards, maintaining a reasonably comfortable controlled environment for people who break our laws. Why should we foot the bill for millions of foreign criminals to live reasonably comfortable and safe lives in our prisons?

This is not an entirely new problem. People have been crossing borders without permission since borders were first created. Looking for a good word to describe this activity, I come up with 'invasion', defined as 'The act of encroaching upon the rights or possessions of another; encroachment; trespass.' Seems like the right term to me. Article IV, Section 4, of the United States Constitution states: "The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence." It is quite clear to me that the federal government is supposed to protect us from these foreign thieves. The question now becomes 'What should our government do about them?'

How have other nations responded to massive invasion of robbers and thieves in the past? The Chinese built the great wall, and defended it with their military. The Romans built forts to protect their cities from brigands and robbers, and killed as many as they could. There are countless occasions where an established people defended their land from robbers by erecting barriers to entry, and by violently repelling foreign invaders. Why should we expect less from our government?
