Quick review. We’re moving from 200mb Starlink to 1gb Fiber. My 1st gen (2016) Google Mesh wifi system isn’t up to the task. We’ve been pushing it pretty hard already. Wifi 7 seems to be the way to go, if you want a system to last a few years. Looked at reviews, the new Google system doesn’t look good to me at all. Amazon has this Eero system, reviews are positive, price is somewhat reasonable.
Arrived yesterday. Shut down my old wifi, and started installing this one. 3 modules, all identical. Phone app, connects to the Eero unit via bluetooth. Dead simple. Configured the base, set it to use basic wired internet. My Starlink is in bridge mode, and I plan to have the new fiber modem do the same. Being behind 2 nat system causes all kinds of problems.
Add a unit, 2nd unit, which is wired to the 1st one. No problem. 3rd unit, which is wireless on the other end of the house, also no problem. Wifi mesh is up. Signal strength is excellent. I’ve got a Wiim Mini in the pool shed, it’s always been borderline on wifi strength. Shows ‘excellent’ signal now. Wyse and Blink cameras around the property, several were also borderline, all showing good connection now.
Throughput wifi to wifi runs at the speed of the wifi adapters. My Mac Air has wifi 7, showing 2.4gb to the base. Internet is still 200mb, but we haven’t got the fiber yet.
This morning, I eliminated 3 100mb switches, power cords, 24 ethernet cables. Converted everything to wifi. The only network cables I have now are from the Starlink router to the base Eero unit, and from Eero unit 1 to 2. Got a whole box full of switches, USB ethernet adapters, and cables that I no longer need… and network speed is FASTER than it was with all that gear. I’ve got one PC, doesn’t have a wifi adapter. Ordered a wifi 7 USB adapter this morning… that should be the end of it.
Eero offers a ‘plus’ subscription. Child safety, additional management tools, etc. I’m not buying. Can’t see that it’d help me much at all. Have to see about long term, but as of now, I’m overjoyed. Printing some wall mounts for the new access points now.
